This is an operation performed to remove the skin at the end of the penis. It tends to be performed if the patient has problems pulling the foreskin back or if there is persistent infection of the glans penis or skin problems.
For a number of reasons, there may have always been a problem with the foreskin but advice has never been sought, often due to embarrasment. A tight forskin (phimosis) can be uncomfortable during arousal or sexual activity and there is an option to undertake a circumcion.
On occasions it may be the frenulum (banjo string) that is too short and a frenoplasty may sort the problem, without the need for a circumcision.
If it not possible to easily retract the foreskin but it does come back then cannot be pulled forward again (paraphimosis) it will need to be sorted with some form of anaesthetic, usually local anaesthetic. If this has occurred, a discussion relating to the benefit of corcumcion may be required.
